If you’re looking for a quick and easy day trip to escape the city and play in the dirt, check out Eisenhower State Park!
Our original plan was camp overnight in Oklahoma, but the forecast wasn’t looking great, so we decided just get our outdoor fix from a more local location. There are overnight campsites here at Eisenhower, but you need to reserve them and we didn’t do that in time. We found some great day picnic sites though, and got a full day’s worth of adventure!
Our first order of business was hitting up the beach. The sand was so soft and easy to play in! I wish we would have brought more sand toys though- note to self. The beach was small, but it wasn’t very crowded, so it was perfect for our little families. From the beach, we scrambled along some rocks to some little caves. Owen LOVED climbing around the rocks!
Make sure and look closely at all the boulders throughout the park. How cool is this?! There were fossils everywhere!

Next, we hiked back up to our picnic site for lunch. (Remember that when I’m in Texas, I use the word “hike” very lightly. VERY lightly.) We set up hammocks, basked in the sun, and let the boys ride their bikes around.

The little boys fell asleep on the way home after playing so hard, and we all had a touch of pink on our skins. The perfect way to end a day!

Cost is $5/day per adult. Campsites are a little more and should be reserved in advance.
It took us just over an hour to get here from Dallas.
Pack: lots of food and water! Hammocks, beach toys, a change of clothes, bikes, and good walking shoes.
There are bathrooms with running water- always a plus!
We parked right at the beach trailhead and stayed in this area the whole time. You can also head over to Armadillo hill for more bike trails. There are camping sites all around the lake.
