Why I Love Mondays

Yup, you read that right! I love Mondays! and for more reasons than one! Should I do this in list form or just start rambling? Hmm… let’s go with ramble.

For as long as I can remember, I’ve heard people complain about Mondays. And when everyone complains about something, it’s so easy to jump on the bandwagon and be like “yah… Mondays stink! take me to the weekend!” When I was in college a  looong time ago (and by looong time I mean 8 years haha) is when realized I should hop off this bandwagon because I was complaining about something that didn’t actually make me unhappy. I had things to look forward to come Monday!

This may have to do with the fact that I’ve never actually consistently had Saturdays “off.” I played lacrosse in college, which included Saturday morning practices or weekend tournaments. After I graduated, I did shift work at a treatment center and worked almost every Saturday morning for years. I didn’t stop working until two years after my son was born. Currently, I’m a stay-at-home-mom, and we all know that as a mom, work doesn’t end Friday at 5. There’s really never been a reason for me to live for the weekend.

Don’t get me wrong, weekends are great! I like that my husband has work off so he can play with our son. I like participating in community events and going on family adventures. Church on Sunday is great! I need that weekly spirituality check, plus it’s fun to see friends at church. I also like not really having a schedule on the weekends. But by two days of living like that…staying up late, waking up early (cuz… 2 y.o.), eating junk food, and letting the house look like a tornado hit… I am ready to get back to the structure of weekdays.

I really appreciate the opportunity to set goals and start over so often. I almost always go to bed on Sunday nights feeling motivated for the week ahead. “I’m going to wake up early, work out hard, eat healthy, clean my house, do fun things with my family, read!” Then on Mondays, I usually follow through with these goals. I wake up early, work out hard, eat healthy, clean my house, do something fun with my family, read, and go to bed feeling like superwoman. I experience the feelings of excitement, motivation, and accomplishment more on Mondays than on any other day of the week! This paragraph alone pretty much sums up why I love Mondays.

Side note: Usually by Tuesday night I’m scarfing down a sleeve of Oreo’s, sitting in a pile of laundry, scrolling through Instagram at 11 pm. Blog post for another day. And the reason this post is about loving Mondays, not Tuesdays.

The other point I want to make about loving Mondays is this: Don’t live your life waiting for the weekend. Don’t live your life waiting for summer, for promotion, for retirement, or any other stage that is “ahead” of you. Work towards those things, sure! Be excited for them! But the realist/paranoia/optimist in me says that those days we are waiting for don’t actually come for everyone, so enjoy where you’re at today. Quoting one of my favorite people ever, “The trick is to enjoy life. Don’t wish away your days, waiting for better ones ahead.” -Marjorie Hinckley

There’s obviously going to be a lot of Mondays in your life! So next time you see someone post on Instagram how crappy it is that it’s Monday, don’t give in to the “Mondays suck” feeling that people try to spread around. Find something you enjoy about the day. Do you like your job? Did you accomplish your goals? Did you talk to your friends? (If you answered no to any of these questions, maybe you need to make some changes in your life! haha)  If you learn to love Mondays then you won’t have to deal with the “Monday blues” that apparently strike some people every seven days.  I choose to love Mondays for what they are: a chance to start over and make myself proud.
